Six stories from the last 24 hours for owner-operators, final mile drivers and dealers.

⛽ Diesel Hits $6.32 — And Washington Is Raiding the Heating Oil Reserve

Fuel is the story every driver already feels at the pump. AAA puts the national diesel average at about $6.32 a gallon, a record during the Iran war, and the federal response is unusual: the Energy Department will lend 315,000 barrels from the 1-million-barrel Northeast Home Heating Oil Reserve, with deliveries wrapping up by Nov. 13.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright called the loan temporary and used the moment to urge New York and New England governors to approve a proposed natural gas pipeline. Roughly 4% of U.S. households heat with oil, which is why the reserve exists. Diesel and heating oil are close cousins, and low distillate stocks going into winter are the pressure point.

For anyone running on thin margins, this is a reminder that a one-time loan isn't a price cut. It's a supply cushion, and the next weekly price print will show whether it matters.

What it means for you: Owner-operators should recheck fuel surcharge terms on every load; final mile drivers paid by the mile should ask about fuel adjustments; dealers can expect fuel economy to dominate buyer conversations.

⚡ Tesla Says the Semi Is in High-Volume Production

Tesla reports it began high-volume manufacturing of its Class 8 Semi in the third quarter at its Nevada factory, with installed capacity of 25,000 trucks a year. It didn't say how many have actually been built or delivered, so capacity and output are two different numbers.

The top variant is rated at 500 miles at 82,000 lbs gross combination weight and 1.7 kWh per mile, which Tesla says uses a third of the energy of a comparable diesel truck. Europe is next: customer demos in the first half of 2027 and deliveries by the end of 2027, backed by more than 100 Megacharger stalls rated up to 1.2 megawatts.

With diesel above $6, the energy math gets more attention, but charging access and upfront price will decide who can actually use it.

What it means for you: Owner-operators on fixed regional routes should watch real-world pricing and charger locations; dealers should prepare for customer questions about EV total cost of ownership.

🏭 International Is Adding a Second Shift in San Antonio

International Motors plans a second shift at its San Antonio plant in 2027, after lifting output to about 100 trucks a day in the fourth quarter of 2026. Production is expected to nearly double once the shift is running, and hiring has already begun.

The numbers behind it: third-quarter truck and bus sales rose 48% year over year to 19,900 vehicles, and September production at the Escobedo, Mexico plant more than doubled to 4,015 from 1,895. CEO Mathias Carlbaum cautioned the shift start could slip a month or two, with production stepping up in early 2027.

More supply is good news for dealers who've fought allocation limits, and for buyers waiting on build slots.

What it means for you: Dealers carrying International should ask about 2027 allocation; owner-operators shopping medium and heavy duty may see better availability by spring.

🔧 Mack: Fleets Are "Cautiously Optimistic" for 2027

Mack Trucks President Jonathan Randall describes fleet sentiment as cautiously optimistic, with strong quote activity and early planning for replacement purchases. The caveat is familiar: the final EPA rule is still pending.

Randall said Mack has committed over $1 billion to renew its conventional lineup, including the Pioneer, Anthem, Keystone and Granite, a decision made before current market conditions. Service Director Ashish Sadhu added that Mack uses data from a large base of connected vehicles and targets truck availability of 99% or higher.

Quotes are rising while orders wait on emissions clarity, which matches the pattern in recent order data.

What it means for you: Get quotes in writing now; dealers should log quote activity as an early read on 2027 demand; owner-operators should ask about uptime commitments.

📦 Truck Tonnage Rises 0.8% in September

The American Trucking Associations' For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index rose 0.8% in September to 114, recovering from a 0.2% dip in August. It's flat compared to a year ago, an improvement from August's 1.3% decline, and year-to-date tonnage sits 0.9% above 2025.

The not-seasonally-adjusted index slipped 1.4% from August to 114.8. ATA's chief economist said capacity is still contracting, which is helping motor carriers.

Freight volume isn't surging, but fewer trucks chasing it supports rates, which is why reefer and spot markets have felt tight.

What it means for you: Owner-operators have some rate leverage while capacity shrinks; dealers should read steady tonnage as stable, not booming, demand.

💧 Toyota Shows 8-Minute Hydrogen Refueling for Heavy Trucks

Toyota Motor North America's H2HQ division installed two mobile hydrogen fueling units at its Ontario, California, parts center, with a permanent station planned for freight trucks running between the Port of Los Angeles and the Inland Empire.

Working with the Department of Energy's National Laboratory of the Rockies, Toyota validated 70 MPa high-flow fueling delivering up to 300 grams of hydrogen per second, about five times faster than typical light-duty fueling. Heavy-duty trucks refueled in roughly eight minutes for a range up to 450 miles, and production trucks begin commercial operations in 2027.

Refuel time is a make-or-break number for drivers paid by the load, and eight minutes is competitive with diesel. Station availability is still the open question.

What it means for you: Drayage and regional operators in Southern California should track this corridor; dealers should expect hydrogen questions as 2027 approaches.
