Trucker Tales, Oct. 19: Natural Gas Long Haul, Fuel-Saving Aero and Trailer Theft Tech
Slow Monday on the wire, so no padding: three verified stories, all fresh off the ATA Management Conference floor in Charlotte.
🔥 Natural Gas Is Back on the Show Floor, and $6 Diesel Is the Reason
When diesel runs above $6 a gallon, every alternative-fuel pitch gets a second look. Hexagon Agility is making its case at the ATA Management Conference & Exhibition, showing a Freightliner Cascadia powered by Cummins' X15N natural gas engine with compressed natural gas tanks, according to Transport Topics.
The numbers up front: the tanks carry fuel equal to 265 gallons of diesel, and the company says that gives the truck a range above 1,200 miles. That targets the old objection that natural gas can't run long haul. Hexagon's argument is that rising diesel prices make natural gas trucks more cost-effective to operate. Those are company claims, not independent test results, so use them as a starting point for your own math.
Transtex also showed cab extender fairings on a Western Express tractor, which it says reduce drag and improve fuel economy without changing the powertrain.
What it means for you: Ask any dealer pitching natural gas for real cost per mile, fueling coverage on your lanes and resale numbers before you switch. Dealers: expect these questions this winter. Fixed-route last-mile drivers are the likeliest early fit.

💨 Three Gallons Per 1,000 Miles: FlowBelow's Redesigned AeroSlider
Fuel is the line item everyone is staring at, so aero add-ons are getting attention. FlowBelow unveiled a redesigned Trailer AeroSlider at the ATA conference, and CCJ reports the company claims a saving of 3 gallons per 1,000 miles when it's paired with trailer wheel covers. The AeroSlider alone delivers just over 1.5 gallons by the company's figures.
At the mid-October national average of $6.179 a gallon, CCJ puts that at about $18.54 saved per 1,000 miles. Independent MVT Solutions testing from June 2026 was slightly more conservative: 1.77 gallons for the rear fairings and flow-through mud flaps and 1.23 gallons for the wheel covers per 1,000 miles, which still totals roughly 3 gallons.
The redesign uses a single fairing, weighs under 30 pounds and installs in under 45 minutes. FlowBelow says payback can come in under 12 months even on trailers running 30,000 miles a year.
What it means for you: If you pull your own trailer, a sub-12-month payback deserves a calculator session. Trailer dealers and parts counters have a fuel-savings story to sell this fall. Lower-mileage box-truck operators should run their own numbers first, since payback will be slower.

🔒 Trailers Can Be Stolen in Under a Minute. Trinetra Guard Wants to Stop That.
Cargo and trailer theft keep climbing the list of things that keep small operators up at night, and a new product at the ATA show targets it directly. Trinetra Guard demonstrated its EM6000Auto, which pairs electronic authorization locks with motorized landing gear, CCJ reports.
The pitch rests on a blunt fact from the company: trailers can be stolen in under a minute. The system is designed to restrict unauthorized trailer movement, so a thief who hooks up to a parked trailer can't simply crank the landing gear and drive away. Trinetra says development took roughly three years.
It isn't on sale yet. The company is working with pilot customers, including trailer manufacturers and leasing agencies, and expects to open orders early next year.
What it means for you: Nothing to buy today, but this is where theft prevention is heading. Dealers and leasing companies should expect questions about factory-installed security, and owner-ops should ask insurers whether trailer security hardware earns any premium consideration.
